Felicity McCall
Reckoning

ReckoningReckoning is the debut novel by Derry-based writer and journalist, Felicity McCall.

It tells the story of three very different women; Dori, Sheila and Anita; who forge what they promise will be a life-long friendship as fifteen-year-old schoolgirls in Armagh.

On a trip to Dublin, the three write down, privately, their individual hopes, aspirations and predictions for the future.

They seal them in an envelope, which they agree to be open when they are forty, unimaginable years away.

A quarter of a century later life has taken them on different paths. Dori has won critical acclaim as a documentary maker, but seems to live for her work; Sheila, a teacher, appears to the outside world to be the epitome of domestic contentment; while Anita, whose acting career has long since been abandoned, is a single parent facing instability in both her private and professional worlds.

Contact between the three is now little more than a ritual connecting them to their shared past. Until the sudden re-appearance of their long-lost letters to the future makes each of them realise that the planned reunion to open it is more important than she could have imagined. What secrets will it contain? What will it tell them about the girls they were- and the women they hoped to become? And, when Sheila adds another dimension to their reunion- a confession- what will be the implications for their friendship- and their future?

Reckoning is a novel of love and loss, hope and disillusion, friendship and betrayal- and of three women coming to terms with the adults they are, after the teenage girl they once were exacts her day of reckoning.

Reviewed as a “compulsive page-turner” Reckoning won praise for bridging the area between literary and popular fiction and was described in a BBC review as “ not for women readers only, but an absorbing, empathic book which touches on the experience of how friendship must adapt and change with time if it is to survive, and grow.”
